What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease occurs when the soft tissues of the mouth — the gums — become infected by bacteria. Also called periodontal disease, the infection can be the result of poor oral hygiene, genetics, co-occurring health conditions, or unidentified causes, and can lead to significant damage to your mouth, including your teeth and your jaw, if left untreated.

What Are The Symptoms Of Gum Disease?

In the early stages of gum disease, you may not notice any symptoms at all. However, as time passes, you’ll experience things like bleeding gums, inflamed and swelling gum tissue, discomfort, and even loose teeth. If left untreated, more serious symptoms can occur, including the loss of a significant amount of bone tissue, damage to your teeth and jaw, tooth loss and even additional health complications in the rest of your body.

What Is Scaling & Root Planing?

Most people who are diagnosed with gum disease are treated using a simple procedure called scaling and root planing. Also known as a deep cleaning, this process is related to a regular dental cleaning, but involves focusing on cleaning out the pockets of infected gum tissue that develop over time, as well as removing the buildup of plaque and tartar on the roots of your teeth. We typically recommend that patients with gum disease schedule a deep cleaning at least twice a year, however, more frequent appointments may be needed for more severe cases.
